Christians within a party are not inherently wrong. Many Christians support socially moderate (dare I say liberal) policies that are entirely consistent with mainstream Canadian values. In fact most Canadians admit to at least some belief in a higher power yet continue to vote for the Liberal and NDP parties.
The problem is, how does Harper avoid the appearance that the CPC has is being hijacked by a more activist fundamentalist Christian?
Welcome, Brian. Hate Christians? Me? Not at all. I'm just collecting data. I think if you read my entry "How many evangelical-swallows make up a takeover?" you'll see that I think that at the moment there is no discernible pattern.
Unless I'm mistaken, the CPC (and its ancestor-forms) is more historically WASP-ish, while the Liberal Party tends more towards Catholics historically. Currently, I'm more CPC-ish than Liberal, because I see the Liberals as having betrayed their mandate of looking out for the little guy - they seem more obsessed with power for power's sake every moment they clutch to it (to approximately paraphrase something the G&M wrote a few weeks ago).
Although I find some of the ways of expressing their views publicly a little goofy, I feel I have more in common with many evangelicals than I do with other Catholics who deny the evil of abortion, for example. Frankly, I've been to a couple of marriage rallies, and been very thankful to have the likes of Bishop Fred Henry speaking to the issue of SSM - he does so with the right balance of truth and compassion that I don't always see from other anti-SSM speakers.
In the interests of fairness, you really should include a list of socon candidates in all parties - otherwise it seems like you're picking on the CPC'ers unfairly. Of course, it's your list.

Snoop. So far I have left out socon MPs of all parties, for reasons that I'll post shortly.
Koby. Thanks, I've added a link.
Nothing scary about it, hearheare. Nor is there anything scary about listing them.

Buckets, would you be able to comment on why this post was deleted?
